For almost sixty years now, the Consorzio Barolo Barbaresco Alba Langhe e Roero has both testified to and played a discreet leading role in technical, economic, and human development, with its membership - represented in most cases by wineries which only market estate-grown products - bringing together all the various professions involved in the growing, producing and marketing of wines.

The need to come together in an association to protect their interests was felt by producers of Barolo and Barbaresco as soon as they realised they had a product of exceptional value on their hands.

An application was made in 1908 for the creation of a "certificate of origin", to be issued by an association operating under the control of the provincial government and the Piedmontese Wine Union pending its regulation by a special law.

This was not forthcoming until 1924, when a law was issued regulating "typical wines" with characteristics which had to be consistent and defined in the Statute of a consortium. Work thus began on setting up a Consortium for the Protection of Barolo and Barbaresco. The first draft of the statute was drawn up for discussion in 1927, and the "Consorzio per la difesa dei vini tipici di pregio Barolo e Barbaresco" was finally set up in 1934 with the purpose of safeguarding the typical characteristics of the wines, and promoting and defending their names and quality wherever appropriate. Rules were also laid down with regard to their production: the growing areas, the grapes, and the characteristics of the wines.
Following its reconstitution after the war in 1947, the Consortium set to work to obtain DOC (denomination of controlled origin) - and later DOCG (denomination of controlled and guaranteed origin) - status recognition for their wines. The new law on the denominations of origin of wines (no. 164) was issued in 1992, and in 1994 the Consortium underwent a final reform with the setting up of the present-day "Consorzio di Tutela Barolo, Barbaresco, Alba, Langhe e Roero".
