Click to enlarge      Valtellina is located in northern Italy, an east-west valley north of Lake Como between the Retiche Alps and the Orobie Alpine foothills with, thanks to its unique position, a remarkable and unusual set of climatic conditions. Sondrio, located in the middle of the valley, is the capital of the province.

On the sunny Retiche side the Romans developed vine culture and, over the centuries, the rural landscape was converted by the construction of a network of terraces supported by dry-stone walls. Nebbiolo was introduced in the 14th century, but development of trade in Nebbiolo wines started between the 16th and 18th centuries when Valtellina was under the rule of Switzerland.

Click to enlarge Valtellina wines, known and appreciated all over the world, are obtained exclusively from Nebbiolo. Both Valtellina Superiore DOCG from sub-zones Maroggia, Sassella, Grumello, Inferno, Valgella together with Sforzato DOCG all carry Italy's most prestigeous appellation, Controlled and Guaranteed Denomination of Origin.
